St Peter’s Nursery School

St Peter’s Nursery School has over 450 children and is located in Lamin. The school is run by the Catholic Mission and the Gambian Government.

With very little funding the school was in a very poor state of repair. Classrooms were dark and extremely hot, children were sitting on broken chairs and tables and in the rainy season children would have lessons in the rain as the roof was leaking. In one class there 88 children being taught by one teacher. Another 50 children were also waiting to start school because the school had no space for them.

Over the past few years funds have been raised to improve the school which has included a new roof, installing larger windows, building new toilets, erecting a school fence to make the school more secure, extending the playground and providing new tables and chairs.

In 2024 2 new classrooms were built so more children are able attend school.

Although parents don’t pay fees at this school they still have to purchase uniform, books and pay for study fees which many of them cannot afford to do. The school has very few resources, cannot afford to employ more teachers or do any much-needed repair work to the school. In light of this we continue to provide reading books, handwriting books, pens, pencils, pencil cases and other school equipment.
